Automation Designed for Resiliency

How many times have you had to reboot or repair a mobile device, a PC, or something even more important because of a malfunction? These types of failures are at the very least a nuisance. But for critical industrial systems, which are often expected to run 24/7/365, outages can result in far greater expenses and consequences.

What is a Solenoid Valve?
Valves come in many shapes and sizes and are a basic type of mechanical component used in all manner of equipment, machinery, and processes. Valves can physically be opened or closed completely, and sometimes to positions in-between, to control the availability, flow, and pressure of gasses and liquids.  This article specifically looks at solenoid-operated valves?commonly called solenoid valves?and how they work to enable many industrial automation capabilities.

What is VFD Safe Torque Off, and How Does it Improve Safety?
Machinery and equipment motors are commonly operated by variable frequency drives (VFDs) to provide motor speed control and energy savings. However, designers must incorporate emergency stop (e-stop) electrical interlocks to stop the motor if any unsafe condition is sensed or an operator triggers an e-stop device. Safe Torque Off (STO) implementations are designed to be fail-safe by completely removing output torque and allowing the motor to coast to a stop in an emergency situation.
