Industrial Automation Mobile Access on the Rise
Most consumers are comfortable with?and even reliant on?easy access to information, technologies, and personal communications using their mobile devices, like phones and tablets. These same commercial trends are making their way into the industrial sector, and to gauge the progress, AutomationDirect surveyed industrial users back in June 2016 and now in August 2021. We found that in 2016, only about 28% of respondents were using mobile devices, but in 2021, the number has increased to 62%.

Connecting AI to the OT
This greenhouse automation startup shows how AutomationDirect controllers are a flexible platform for connecting cloud-based artificial intelligence to practical operations manufacturing automation. Connecting AI concepts to age-old agricultural operations using modern IoT methods is the ambitious undertaking of Kenneth Tran and his team at Koidra. The resulting ?artificial intelligence of things? (AIoT) is yielding positive results for optimizing greenhouse control, and it is applicable to all types of manufacturing systems.

Building User-Focused Water/Wastewater Utility Systems
Many water utilities could benefit from using robust and standardized PLC automation, instead of enduring inconsistent and difficult- to-troubleshoot custom control systems.
While many people settle for things that are good enough, sometimes it takes relatively little extra effort to make things excellent. Dennis O’Hara experienced this many times as he progressed from getting an electrical engineering degree, to serving in the Marines as an officer, to working for an electric utility, and finally to creating his own automation company serving the water/wastewater industry.
Helping Automation Users Wake Up and Smell the Coffee
Those already working in the industrial automation space are aware of the advances over recent years with controllers, communications, and other technologies used for projects of all sizes. Whether the automation task is a single machine or a factory, there are many options for creating practical, robust, and secure automation solutions. Working with smaller home automation do-it-yourself (DIY) type projects is a great way to learn how to design, build, program, and protect industrial automation systems.
