It’s Time to Have A Talk About Safety

I remember physical education from elementary school back in the 1980s. Phys ed was always a treat as I got to get out of our regular classes and do something besides sit in a classroom. It was almost as if I had a bonus recess that day. Now, that was until third grade when my gym teacher, Mr. Pritchett, started having “the talk” with us before every class. No, not that talk, a discussion about safety. I’m unsure what happened during the summer between second and third grade, but Mr. Pritchett suddenly took the safety of his students very seriously. Maybe it was mandated by the state, maybe the school district had a talk with him, or maybe he just genuinely cared about us.

Whatever the reason, those talks seemed to take so much time away from the fun we were anticipating. It was literally 20 to 30 minutes out of our 1-hour gym class. However, they made an impression. Otherwise, I wouldn’t remember them forty years later.

Mr. Pritchett was doing the right thing. Protecting people isn’t only the empathetic thing to do; it makes good business sense. Downtime to tend to an injury reduces productivity, as does lost work hours from an injured employee. Workers’ compensation insurance premiums can increase, and the risk of legal action is also a reality. This can add up to a significant financial loss.

Using safety products in a properly designed system by a qualified individual after a safety audit can reduce the risk of injury or death of personnel and protect your equipment and facility from damage.
